General Outline for Science Fair
1: Choose your topic - Pick something unique, original and that you actually want to learn about. What are you interested
in?
2: Begin Pre-Research - Once you have some ideas about what you might want to do...research these topics. Is there a
testable question? Can you create an experiment that will further your knowledge on the topic?
3: Begin Research - Now that you have your topic chosen and question asked, begin the research that will help you create
your hypothesis. A hypothesis is your educated answer to the question being asked prior to experimentation. YOU MUST RESEARCH
PRIOR TO MAKING HYPOTHESIS AND EXPERIMENTING!
4: Design Experiment - Plan out an experiment that will test your question and support or refute your hypothesis. Write
the experiment plan in very specific and clear step by step directions. Someone should be able to read your plan and repeat
the experiment EXACTLY as you preformed it.
5: Conduct Experiment - Enough said? Have fun and be careful. Be sure to document all observations and data clearly.
6: Organize & Analyze Data - Put results into tables, charts and/or graphs. Look for trends or patterns. How do
these results answer your question?
7: Support or Refute Hypothesis - What do your results show? Is your hypothesis supported? Or is your hypothesis refuted?
How?
8: Conclusion - Where would you go from here to further your knowledge on this topic? What new questions do you have?
What would you do differently? Is there a new experiment you would like to conduct that would give you more information?
Overall, what have you learned from this experience?
